Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church

Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church had its origins in 1883 as a Methodist congregation that built its first wood frame church at the corner of 6th Avenue and 3rd Street. Rebuilt in brick at the same location in 1900, it was named "Century Methodist Church". The congregation outgrew that building and a new structure was built in 1912 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 4th Street. That inspiring sactuary is still used today. In 1925 the Methodist Church in Canada was one of the founding congregations of the United Church of Canada. At that time the name of the local church was changed to Fifth Avenue United Church. In the mean time small congregations of Congregationalists, Presbyterians, and Methodist in the River Flats area joined together to for Memorial Salem United Church. In 1998 Memorial Salem United Church and Fifth Avenue United Church amalgamated, and the name combined to "Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church".

Whatever the name, the activities continue to provide spiritual refreshment and a community of caring people in the heart of downtown Medicine Hat. The public is welcome to quiet reflection in our beautiful sanctuary, to walk the labyrinth in the hall, or to read in the library any time the office is open and the spaces are not booked.

Sunday mornings the building is open 9 am to noon for personal reflection, labyrinth walking, and for the church service which begins at 10 am.

Three choirs meet at the church. The church choir rehearses on Thursday evenings. Contact music@famunitedchurch.ca if you are interested in joining the church choir. Also the "Joyful Sounds" Women's choir meets on Tuesday evenings, and the Veiner Senior's choir meets on Wednesday Mornings. Singing is good for the soul and good for health. Try it! You'll like it!

Cub and Scout Groups will be back in the church fall of 2017.
